2016 'Running Bare' Mae's Vineyard Red

2016 'Running Bare' Mae's Vineyard Red
Applegate Valley

Mae’s Vineyard is a LIVE-certified, sustainable site in the Applegate Valley of Southern Oregon, owned and grown to organic standards by Herb Quady, to whom we owe thanks for all of the grapes that we work with in from this region. The vines are 11 years old and thrive in the healthy, volcanic soil full of rich organic material (along with chunks of quartz). This is idyllic, rural wine country, the hills and valleys speckled with small farms here and there, interspersed with winding little rivers and bubbling creeks. The foliage is aromatic with evergreen, eucalyptus, and madrone trees breaking up the pastures and becoming more dense near the tops of the mountains. Ground elevation is about 1,200 - 1,600 feet. So even as the days are hot, the nights always cool off, usually under clear, starry skies in the summer.

Back in 2013, Brianne was very excited to learn that Herb was growing Tannat, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec all side by side, and the idea for this fan-favorite, red field blend took shape. The fruit was grown together, picked together, and fermented together – so blending happened in the field. The 2016 Running Bare is composed of 50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Tannat, and 25% Malbec.

92 points John Gilman in View From the Cellar: "Brianne Day’s unique blend of Running Bare probably should not be listed here in 'Rhône blends', but I do not have a section earmarked for wines with a cépages of fifty percent Cabernet Franc and twenty-five percent each of Tannat and Malbec. This is a field blend that Brianne co-ferments and ages in older casks, with the 2016 version coming in at a cool 12.5 percent octane. It offers up a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, cigar smoke, a bit of pepper, roasted meats, dark soil tones and a lovely topnote of sars aparilla. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a fine core, ripe, moderate tannins and excellent focus and grip on the long and very well-balanced finish. This could do with a few years in the cellar to allow the tannins to soften up a bit on the backend. Fine juice and utterly unique! 2023-2045+." (Jan/Feb 2020)
