Johan Vineyards is an 85 acres, Demeter certified biodynamic site in the Willamette Valley, south of McMinnville and west of Salem. It is owned by Dag Sundby and grown by Dag and Dan Rinke. This was my last Pinot pick of 2015 as the site ripens later than my other Pinot sites, due to proximity to the coast and the Van Duzer corridor. The vineyard sits directly in the path of the costal winds that blow in every evening which keep the afternoons and evenings cool. It is primarily marine sediment soils and the benefit of biodynamic farming is completely apparent when once stands in this healthy & alive place. The fruit was picked the third week of September, 25% remained whole cluster and the fruit was fermented in small lots, without the use of lab created yeast or sulfur. All punchdowns were done with pigeage, by me personally. This site creates such pretty Pinot noir – I love the red berry and rose petal aromas. It was aged in 15 percent new French oak and 85 percent neutral for 19 months. We racked it twice and then bottled it unfiltered and unfined on April 18, 2017.
100% Pinot noir.
