Cancilla Vineyard is a lovely 20 acre site, a former Christmas tree farm just north of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in the north-western Willamette Valley. The vineyard sits close to the Coast Range, exactly halfway between Tillamook and Portland, which allows lots of access to coastal rain water. It is owned and grown (certified organic & dry farmed) by Ken Cancilla. In the hot 2015 vintage the fruit was quite ripe, so this wine is robust and full, with acid & tannins that ensure it will age for years to come. Spicy and floral aromas were abundant throughout fermentation and remain all the way into the bottle. The fruit was fully destemmed, and some stems were added back based on how the stems smelled. This site’s stems have a really specific aroma – like cinnamon, sweet spices, and black pepper. It went through elevage in 15% new French oak and 85% neutral for 19 months. The wine was racked twice, then bottled without fining or filtering on April 18 2017.
